About The whalehouse
The Whalehouse is a Victorian Italianate home built in 1855 by Henry Taber as a wedding gift for his daughter Abby Taber Hunt. Abby lived in the house until the late 1860’s at which point she began renting to Herman Melville’s (of the Moby Dick fame) younger sister, Catherine Melville Hoadley, who lived there for over 6 years.
Over the years the house has changed hands many times. In the 1950s, it was home to the Swain School of Design and many years later served as a popular Bed & Breakfast. We purchased the home from it’s most recent owner who lovingly restored it and we are excited to carry on its legacy.
The Whalehouse is located in the historic west end of New Bedford, Massachusetts. Previously the whaling capital of the world, a stop along the Underground Railroad, and the largest fishing port in the eastern United States, New Bedford is steeped in history. You can bet you will get your fill of both history and excellent seafood during your stay!
Located less than 1 mile from downtown, The Whaling Museum, and the ferry to Martha’s Vineyard & Nantucket. Close proximity to the Rotch Jones Duff House, Bittersweet Farms, Shining Tides, and other area wedding venues.
The home is available to rent for overnight stays, events, productions, and more.
We look forward to hosting you!
