“As time passed, this property took on many visitors, including Catherine Melville Hoadley, the sister of Moby Dick author Herman Melville, who rented the home from the Tabers. Many locals believe Herman Melville may have stayed in the home, because of his close relationship with his sister. Now, the refurbished property can be rented for short-term stays. it includes touches of Melville, Moby Dick, and New Bedford’s whaling history” - Chronicle, Sept. 18, 2024

“One of the most impressive aspects of The Whalehouse is its well-preserved interior with most of the interior still original. The doors, windows, mantels, floors and radiators have all been maintained.” - The Standard-Times, May 28, 2024

“This amazing 19th century home built in 1855 is absolutely spectacular. My family and I became very comfortable in The Whalehouse and we hated to see our time there come to an end.
The original architecture of the home is spectacular and the amazing hand-stenciled walls are a relic of the past. The home is decorated and accessorized, beautifully with books and design elements that reflect the glorious history of New Bedford and the thriving 19th century whaling industry that brought wealth and fame to the city. The Whalehouse has everything you need for a comfortable stay in historic New Bedford. It’s perfect for a family or a group of friends meeting for a special event. We met at The Whalehouse to celebrate the life of my mother who passed away at 102 years. Mom was a native of New Bedford. My family all agree that Whalehouse proved to be the perfect home to celebrate her life. I hope your stay at The Whalehouse is as comfortable, agreeable and exciting as ours was! - Randahl, guest January 2025

“We’ve been coming to New Bedford for the holidays for many years but this was the first time we needed to find a place to stay and The Whalehouse was truly a home away from home! So beautifully decorated, and we had all the amenities we could need in the kitchen to cook a Christmas dinner for our family. The location is also incredibly walkable. Aurora and Brendan were great hosts and we hope to stay at the Whalehouse anytime we are in New Bedford in the future.” - Mika, guest December 2024

“I’d followed the Whalehouse for years online and knew it had been sold. With an event in New Bedford, it was the perfect time to go. I feel so lucky to have stayed. It’s an incredible house in a gorgeous neighborhood. Every detail is so well considered. It’s both beautifully decorated and comfortable. I only wish we could have stayed longer. I hope to come back for a girls’ weekend or family event in the warmer months when we could use the spacious patio as well. It would be perfect for a big family get together. The best Airbnb I’ve stayed in, which is a lot. Do not hesitate to go—the new owners seem just as accommodating as the old ones! Aurora was very responsive when needed and I appreciated being able to check myself in without worrying about holding the host up.” - Kirsten, guest December 2024
